Advocating for the Employment of Adults with Developmental Disabilities

Advocacy for employment was actually the genesis of the LEO organization. The “founding mothers” saw employment services and job coaching as a huge service gap and a need unfilled. Over time this need has been met by other organizations, both private and non-profit, in the form of employment vendors.

Today, we urge families to work with the Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) and existing employment vendors to obtain employment services.

We also encourage families and friends to support those with developmental disabilities in various community activities, such as volunteering to help at Salmon Days, or community clean up days, or participating in the Aktion club supported by AtWork! and the Kiwanis Club of Issaquah.

The LEO organization recognizes those businesses in the community that go the extra mile in hiring people with disabilities. These employers show a willingness to modify hiring procedures, are flexible with job descriptions, allow employment specialists on site for job coaching, provide a network of support for the individual, as well as initiating the recruitment of individuals who have disabilities.
